Specialized Santa Monica – Sustainability Journey

THE ONGOING JOURNEY OF SUSTAINABILITY

At Specialized Santa Monica, we know that bikes have the power to improve lives and change the world. Like all consumer products, however, the process of manufacturing bikes uses resources and produces waste. Specialized directly employs over 1000 people around the world, and at last count, we work with 260 suppliers to provide you with the best bikes and cycling accessories available. Not only that, but we're also committed to continuously evaluating the impacts of our operations, learning what we can do better, and engaging with our employees, our suppliers, and our peers to improve.

OUR VALUES

• Respect for human rights. The people who design, manufacture, distribute, sell, and service Specialized products all deserve to earn fair wages and work in safe conditions, free from coercion, harassment, or abuse.

• Respect for the planet. We will seek to deliver the highest performance products with the minimum footprint and longest life.

• Respect for communities. Collaboration is key to progress on the most difficult challenges we face. Whether we're advocating for local trails, or for better labor and environmental standards in the global bike industry, we seek to collaborate with like-minded individuals and companies who can help us affect the change we wish to see in our communities.

As founding members of the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry Responsible Sporting Initiative (RSI), we are collaborating with a coalition of leading brands and suppliers to create shared standards, tools, and a shared supplier database via the Fair Factories Clearing House. The RSI has enabled us to both quickly and efficiently improve labor and environmental performance in our supply chain, and it serves as a model for what's possible when we collaborate to address shared challenges. If you are a bike brand or supplier, we welcome your participation. Please contact: support@responsiblesportinitiative.org

Social and Environmental Responsibility

Our mission is to be the best cycling brand in the world, and this mission reaches beyond delivering the best cycling products. We recognize that the decisions we make have social and environmental impacts and that we are responsible for minimizing them. Our Social and Environmental Responsibility Program is an ongoing effort to address this commitment in a meaningful and sustainable way.

Sustainability Product Strategies

Sustainability is a word often used loosely when describing processes or products. Everything we create or consume has an impact on the planet, no matter how good the materials or manufacturing process. Our job is to better understand those impacts and make the best possible decisions to help mitigate them.

Carbon Fiber Recycling Program

Thousands of carbon fiber bicycles end up in landfills each year, and we want to change that by helping to establish a take back stream for carbon fiber. Based on existing carbon fiber recycling programs used by the aerospace industry, we now have the ability to steer bikes away from the landfills and back into usable goods.

Code of Conduct

Informed by the World Federation of Sporting Goods Industries (WFSGI) Code of Conduct, the Fair Labor Association, ILO conventions and adjusted to highlight prohibiting slavery and human trafficking. The Specialized Code of Conduct communicates our expectations and forms the foundation of our supplier audit program.
